The Vermont Department of Health, Asbestos and Lead Regulatory Program (ALRP) has been implementing the Renovation, Repair, Painting and Maintenance (RRPM) Program in Vermont since 2022. The ALRP is running ongoing outreach campaigns to contractors, homeowners, and renters of pre-1978 housing to increase awareness of the federal and state RRP regulations.
As an example, the following message was designed to reach renters and has been delivered through local radio, television, newspapers, and online social networking sites.
Renting? Ask Now. Be Lead Safe. For you, your family, and your home.
Is your landlord making repairs? They may need to hire a licensed lead-certified contractor. It’s not just the right thing to do. It’s the law. Know to ask.
Over 60% of Vermont Homes may have lead present. Lead can cause serious health problems. Especially for children.
Make your home safe. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself and your family:
-
- Learn about the Vermont Lead Law.
- Report chipping and peeling paint to your landlord.
- Know what to look for when renovation or repair work is being done.
- Clean windowsills, floors, and other horizontal surfaces regularly.
- Reach out to the Asbestos and Lead Regulatory Program if you have concerns.
