New Surma Factsheets from the Massachusetts Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

In response to the recent increase in Afghan refugees in Massachusetts and population-specific lead exposure concerns, the Massachusetts Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program worked closely with the Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit to adapt a series of factsheets to address the use of surma-based products in a culturally competent manner. Also known as kohl and kajal, information about these products and how to protect your family from lead are now available in Arabic, Dari, Hindi, Pashto, and Urdu.

You can find the new factsheets under the General Health section here on our website.
